In chinese religion, they base their beliefs in Tian, being the dwelling place of the gods (heaven). It refers to the abstract principle of heaven as a being that reigns over the gods and man, it also serves to regulate the universe.
Tian, being the ultimate power, secured both the health of the land and the rightful sovereignty of the rulers through that of the Tian Ming, or the mandate of heaven. This is a designation which determines which rulers are legitimate, only given to those kings that prove to be virtuous and withdrawn from injustice. Therefore those Chinese Kings where known as the Tianzi or the sons of heaven.
